Governor Adeleke Eases Curfew in Osun Communities Ahead of Eid El Kabir Celebrations

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has announced the immediate relaxation of the curfew earlier imposed on the conflict-affected communities of Ifon, Ilobu, and Erin Osun.

The decision comes in the wake of a significant return to peace in the region and aims to facilitate unhindered celebration of the upcoming Eid El Kabir festival.

The development was disclosed in an official statement issued on Saturday by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi.

According to the new directive, the curfew, which previously ran from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., will now be in effect from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., beginning Sunday, May 25, 2025.

“Following the near total return to peace in the warring communities of Ifon, Ilobu, and Erin Osun, it gladdens my heart, as the Chief Security Officer of Osun State, to direct that the hitherto 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. curfew will now be between 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. This takes effect from tomorrow, Sunday, 25th May, 2025,” Governor Adeleke stated.

The governor expressed appreciation to the residents and leaders of the three communities for their cooperation in restoring peace and urged them to sustain the current harmony.

“I commend the three towns and other stakeholders for the peace and harmony currently taking shape. I urge you to please keep it up,” he said.

To ensure continued security and stability, Governor Adeleke directed that a combined team of security personnel—including the Nigerian Army, Police, Department of State Services (DSS), and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps—maintain 24-hour surveillance in the affected areas.

The governor also extended his goodwill to both Muslim and non-Muslim residents, wishing them a joyful and peaceful Eid El Kabir celebration in advance.

“Finally, I am using this medium to wish our dear Muslim and non-Muslim brothers and sisters in the three towns of Ifon, Ilobu, and Erin Osun, as well as Osun State in general, a happy Eid El Kabir festival in advance,” he said.

Governor Adeleke issued a stern warning to community leaders, stating that any disruption of peace by their subjects will result in the leaders being held accountable under the law.

The curfew was initially imposed in March following violent clashes over a long-standing land dispute, which resulted in loss of lives and significant damage to property.
