Ooni of Ife Celebrates Bashorun Dele Momodu at 65, Hails His Legacy of Excellence

The Arole Oduduwa and Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, Ojaja II, has extended heartfelt felicitations to one of Nigeria’s most illustrious sons, Bashorun Ayòbámidélé Àbáyòmí Ojútelégàn Àjàní Momodu, on the occasion of his 65th birthday.

In a statement released by the Director of Media and Public Affairs at the Ooni’s Palace, Otunba Moses Olafare, the monarch described Bashorun Dele Momodu as a “distinguished son of the source” whose life journey represents resilience, cultural pride, and unwavering service to humanity.

Born in the ancient city of Ile-Ife, widely revered as the cradle of Yoruba civilization, Dele Momodu has long remained a beacon of hope and excellence, not only in Nigeria but across the African continent.

His rise from modest beginnings—losing his father at the age of 13—to becoming a globally celebrated media entrepreneur is seen as a powerful testament to perseverance and vision.

A proud alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Momodu earned degrees in Yoruba and English Literature. His academic path reflected a profound reverence for Yoruba culture and a commitment to intellectual and moral integrity.

He began his professional journey as a private secretary to a former Deputy Governor of Ondo State before serving as Manager of Motel Royal Limited under the administration of the late Ooni Okunade Sijuwade, Olubuse II.

Dele Momodu's venture into journalism marked a defining chapter in his life. Starting with African Concord magazine, he rose through the ranks of media, gaining a reputation for fearless reporting and advocacy for justice.

His pro-democracy stance during Nigeria's turbulent political era led to persecution and eventual exile. Undaunted, he went on to establish Ovation International in 1996, a pan-African publication that has since showcased excellence, leadership, and cultural pride across the continent.

Beyond journalism, Bashorun Momodu has played pivotal roles in Nigeria’s socio-political space as a commentator, opinion leader, and one-time presidential aspirant. The Ooni described him as an embodiment of "Yoruba enigmatic excellence" whose voice continues to shape national consciousness and development.

“As he celebrates 65 impactful years on earth, the House of Oduduwa salutes his unwavering dedication to journalism, cultural preservation, and nation-building,” the palace statement read. “May the blessings of the ancestors continue to guide his path, and may his legacy inspire generations to come.”

The Ooni’s tribute to Dele Momodu underscores the significant role he plays in preserving the values of integrity, excellence, and cultural pride—hallmarks of the Yoruba identity.
