Owa Obokun Coronation: Tinubu Approves Rehabilitation of Ilesa-Ife-Ibadan Expressway

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the rehabilitation of the Ilesa-Ife-Ibadan dual carriage expressway, a vital transport corridor in South-West Nigeria.

The announcement was made on Friday during the coronation ceremony of the 49th Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba Adesuyi Clement Haastrup, Ajimoko III.

Speaking on behalf of the President at the event, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, conveyed the administration’s commitment to infrastructure development as part of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He emphasized that the rehabilitation of the expressway is aimed at improving connectivity and boosting economic activities in Osun State and neighbouring regions.

“In line with ongoing federal initiatives in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and agriculture, we are working to uplift lives and expand opportunities across the nation,” President Tinubu stated.

“We recognise the resourcefulness of this land and will continue to partner with traditional institutions to ensure that development is inclusive and enduring.”

The President also extended warm congratulations to Oba Haastrup on his ascension to the throne, expressing confidence that his reign will usher in a new era of cultural revival and community progress in Ijesaland.

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, in his address at the ceremony, praised the new monarch for his longstanding dedication and patriotism.

Recalling Oba Haastrup’s supportive role during his late brother, Senator Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke’s tenure as the first Executive Governor of Osun State, Governor Adeleke described the monarch as a gentleman and a loyal leader.

Highlighting his administration’s efforts to transform Ijesaland, Governor Adeleke announced several major developmental strides.

These include the accreditation of over 50 courses at the University of Ilesa and the official approval of the General Hospital, Ilesa, as the university's teaching hospital—positioning the town as an emerging centre of medical excellence.

“We are focused on upgrading Ilesa to a modern city. The over 12-kilometer Ereja Square to Brewery Junction dual carriageway is nearing completion. This landmark project is opening up Ilesa for business and pleasure like never before,” the Governor stated.

In his acceptance speech, Oba Adesuyi Haastrup expressed profound gratitude to all dignitaries, traditional rulers, and citizens who honoured him with their presence.

“You all sacrificed for me to be here today. I am so glad and elated to witness this momentous day,” the monarch said, pledging to serve Ijesaland with honour, integrity, and vision.

The coronation marks a significant chapter in the history of Ijesaland, blending rich cultural heritage with renewed commitments to growth, unity, and development.
