Why We Arrested VeryDarkMan - EFCC Breaks Silence

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has formally addressed the arrest and ongoing detention of controversial social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, citing multiple petitions relating to alleged financial crimes.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Commission said it had invited Otse to respond to the petitions, which concern serious allegations of financial misconduct. According to the EFCC, he failed to honour several invitations sent to his known addresses and communication channels.

“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, in the exercise of its mandate of tackling economic and financial crimes, invited Martins Vincent Otse owing to a series of petitions... He refused to show up,” the statement said.

The EFCC emphasized that while Otse has made various public statements attacking the Commission and its operations, his arrest was not motivated by those criticisms. It condemned such conduct but affirmed that a law enforcement agency would handle any related issues separately.

“It is needful to admit that the Commission is aware of several unguarded attacks of the suspect against its operations. While such conduct is condemnable, his arrest was not informed by such attacks.”

The Commission added that it had obtained a lawful remand order to detain Otse during investigations. He has been offered administrative bail and is expected to be released upon meeting all bail conditions.

“The EFCC has a lawful right to hold Otse in custody like any other suspect being investigated… He has been offered an administrative bail and would be released after fulfilling all the bail conditions.”

Reiterating its commitment to due process and impartiality, the EFCC urged the public to allow it to carry out its statutory responsibilities without interference or unfounded speculations.

“The EFCC should be allowed to do its job without fear or favour. As soon as investigations are concluded, charges will be filed.”

Martins Vincent Otse, better known as VeryDarkMan, has carved a niche for himself as a blunt and fearless social media commentator. Known for his outspoken views on national issues, celebrity culture, and societal double standards, Otse has cultivated a large following as well as intense scrutiny. He has been involved in several online feuds and often courts controversy for his unconventional delivery and confrontational tone.

Most recently, he gained widespread attention for his vocal involvement in high-profile debates, including critiques of fellow influencers, commentary on celebrity lifestyles, and outspoken takes on social justice issues. While supporters view him as a courageous truth-teller, critics argue that his methods often border on defamation and provocation.

His recent arrest has sparked a wave of online reactions, with many Nigerians questioning the timing and motive behind the EFCC’s actions, especially given Otse’s history of public criticisms.
