JUST IN: Ife Youths Suspend Planned Electricity Protest

A planned peaceful demonstration by the Ife Youths Organisation (IYO) over persistent electricity challenges in Ile-Ife has been officially suspended following a series of high-level engagements with key stakeholders.

The protest, initially scheduled for Wednesday, March 18, 2026, was intended to draw attention to ongoing concerns surrounding irregular power supply and billing issues affecting residents across Ile-Ife and its environs.

However, in a statement issued by the organisation’s Publicity Committee, the decision to suspend the action was reached after extensive consultations with security agencies and electricity distribution authorities.

According to the statement, multiple meetings were held with officials of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), alongside security operatives, culminating in a final stakeholders’ session that included the Ife Progressive Forum (IPF), The Ife Intellectuals (TII), the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Office of the Area Commander.

The youth body noted that the suspension reflects a mutual understanding among all parties and a commitment to resolving the issues through peaceful and constructive dialogue rather than public demonstration.

“The decision was taken in the interest of maintaining peace and allowing ongoing engagements to yield meaningful outcomes for the community,” the statement indicated.

The Ife Youths Organisation further expressed appreciation to residents, stakeholders, and supporters who had shown solidarity with the planned demonstration, assuring that the concerns raised remain a priority and will continue to be pursued through appropriate channels.

Electricity supply has remained a major concern for many residents in Ile-Ife, with recurring complaints about inconsistent power delivery and perceived irregularities in billing practices.

The suspension of the protest signals a shift toward dialogue-driven resolution, as stakeholders work toward addressing the challenges affecting households and businesses in the ancient city.

The organisation assured the public that further updates would be communicated as discussions progress and outcomes begin to materialise.
