Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has confirmed the appointment of Rt. Hon. Adejare Bello as the new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the institution’s Governing Council.
The announcement followed an official communication received by the University authorities from the Federal Government regarding the appointment of the former Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly.
In a statement released by the University’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, the institution noted that Bello brings to the position a wealth of experience spanning legislative leadership, diplomacy, and public service.
According to the statement, Bello previously served with distinction as Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, where he was widely recognised for his leadership, integrity, and commitment to democratic governance.
He also represented Nigeria on the international stage as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Mexico in June 2021, with concurrent accreditation to Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Panama. During his diplomatic tenure, he contributed to strengthening Nigeria’s international relations and fostering intergovernmental cooperation.
Bello is an alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University, where he studied Law, a background the institution believes will further strengthen his understanding of the University’s heritage, aspirations, and long-term strategic direction.
A native of Ede in Osun State, Bello is widely regarded for his humility, accessibility, and strong interpersonal relationships, qualities that have earned him respect across political and social circles.
The University community expressed strong confidence in his ability to provide visionary leadership and to work collaboratively with the Governing Council, University management, staff unions, students, alumni, and other stakeholders to advance the institution’s mission and global reputation.
Authorities of the University also congratulated Bello on the appointment, expressing optimism that his leadership will usher in a new phase of stability, progress, and academic excellence for the institution.
