Easter: Ooni Urges Peace, Religious Harmony Among Nigerians

As Christians across Nigeria mark the Easter celebration, the Ooni of Ife, Arole Oduduwa, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, has called on citizens to embrace peace, love, and religious harmony, stressing the urgent need for unity in a time of national challenges.

In a statement released on Friday by the Director of Media and Public Affairs at the Ooni’s Palace, Otunba Moses Olafare, the revered monarch described Easter as a deeply significant spiritual season symbolizing sacrifice, renewal, and the triumph of hope over adversity. He noted that the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ offer timeless lessons on selflessness, forgiveness, and unwavering faith, virtues he urged Nigerians to reflect in their daily interactions.

Highlighting the importance of national cohesion, the Ooni emphasized that Nigeria’s progress and stability are closely tied to unity among its diverse people, regardless of religious or ethnic differences. He stated that peaceful coexistence remains the foundation for sustainable development and long-term national growth.

The monarch further noted that the essence of Easter goes beyond celebration, describing it as a reminder of the power of sacrifice, the strength of faith, and the victory of good over evil, while urging Nigerians to embrace these values in fostering a more united and progressive society.

Addressing the country’s current realities, the Ooni urged citizens to use the Easter period as a moment of reflection and prayer for the nation, particularly for its leaders, peace, and economic recovery. He stressed that collective prayers, alongside positive individual and communal actions, are essential to overcoming Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges.

While acknowledging the economic hardships faced by many Nigerians, he encouraged citizens not to lose hope but to remain resilient and optimistic about the future. He also charged leaders at all levels of governance to embody compassion, integrity, and accountability, noting that true leadership mirrors the sacrificial spirit that Easter represents.

Reaffirming his commitment to fostering unity, the Ooni reiterated the importance of interfaith dialogue and mutual respect among adherents of different religions. He added that Nigeria’s diversity should be embraced as a source of strength rather than division.

The monarch concluded by extending his warm wishes to Christians nationwide, praying that the Easter season brings renewed hope, peace, and prosperity to every home and the country at large.
