June 12: Tinubu Cancels National Broadcast, To Address Nigerians From National Assembly

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has cancelled the traditional national broadcast scheduled for Democracy Day, opting instead to address Nigerians from a joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday, June 12, 2025.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), Mr. Segun Imohiosen.

The statement reads:

“As part of the celebration of Democracy Day on June 12, 2024, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will address the nation from the venue of the joint session of the National Assembly, marking 25 years of unbroken democratic rule in Nigeria.

“The event will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, June 12, 2024.

“Consequently, the earlier announced broadcast by Mr. President at 7:00 a.m. on the same day will no longer hold.

“All television, radio, and other electronic media outlets are enjoined to hook up to the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) for the live broadcast of the address.”

In addition to the address, a public lecture is expected to hold later in the day at the State House Conference Centre, Presidential Villa, Abuja, as part of the 2025 Democracy Day activities.

The lecture is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. and will feature prominent speakers discussing the theme: “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms.”

Meanwhile, the customary Democracy Day military parade will not take place this year, though no official reason has been provided for its cancellation.

President Tinubu’s decision to speak from the National Assembly has been interpreted by analysts as a symbolic gesture reinforcing the significance of legislative collaboration and national unity as Nigeria marks 25 consecutive years of democratic governance.

The President’s address at the joint session is expected to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey, ongoing reforms, and national priorities.

Tune in to Ifecityblog TV for the live broadcast of the address.
