Ooni’s Spokesman Faults Alaafin’s Media Team Over Misleading Viral Video

A public statement issued by Otunba Moses Olafare, spokesperson to the Ooni of Ife, has faulted the media team of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Adeniran Owoade, Elewuetu I, over the circulation of a viral video that allegedly misrepresented the monarch’s conduct at the recently concluded West Africa Economic Summit in Abuja.

According to Olafare, the video, released by The Oyo Legacies — a media outfit linked to the Alaafin’s camp — failed to portray the full context of the Alaafin’s dignified and respectful engagement at the event, especially his warm interaction with the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, Ojaja II.

The summit, held at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre on Saturday, was attended by key traditional rulers and dignitaries from across the region.

The Ooni, who serves as Co-chairman of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN), was already seated in the VIP lounge when the Alaafin arrived.

Olafare stated that in a display of humility and royal courtesy, the Alaafin bypassed his designated seat and walked directly to the Ooni to exchange warm greetings and light-hearted conversation before eventually proceeding to his seat with his queen.

The cordial moment, Olafare noted, was a powerful symbol of mutual respect and unity between two prominent Yoruba monarchs.

However, the viral video allegedly omitted this interaction and instead gave the impression that the Alaafin had refused to greet the Ooni — a depiction described by Olafare as not only misleading but also damaging to the image of the Alaafin.

“The video failed to reflect the true spirit of unity, peace, and humility demonstrated by the Alaafin,” he said. “Rather than supporting their principal, the media handlers have inadvertently created negative public perception by circulating an inaccurate narrative.”

He emphasized that those charged with managing the public image of traditional rulers must understand the weight of their responsibility, urging greater professionalism, accuracy, and respect for traditional protocol.

“It is unfortunate that such a gracious gesture of royal courtesy was omitted,” Olafare added, noting that the Alaafin also used the opportunity to schedule a visit to the Ooni in Ile-Ife later this week — further reflecting the existing bond between both leaders.

Calling for a review of the handling of royal communications, Olafare concluded: “Alaafin’s Media Team Must Be Rejigged.”
