OAU Student Takes Own Life After Checking Examination Results

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) community has been thrown into mourning following the death of a student in the Faculty of Dentistry, who reportedly took his own life shortly after the release of examination results.

The tragic incident was confirmed in an official statement issued by the President of the Ife University Dental Students’ Association (IFUDSA), Adebayo Idris, on behalf of the association.

“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of one of our colleagues in the Faculty of Dentistry,” the statement read. “We have received the painful news that he took his own life shortly after the release of examination results.”

Idris described the development as a devastating loss, not only to the faculty but to the entire OAU community, stressing that it underscores the silent struggles many students face.

“This loss is not just the departure of a promising young mind, but a painful reminder of the silent battles many students endure,” he said. “As an association, we are devastated, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, classmates, and all who knew him.”

Acknowledging the emotional impact of the tragedy, Idris urged students to support one another and seek professional help when needed.

“We understand that this tragedy will leave many in shock, with questions and emotions that may be difficult to process. We encourage all members of our faculty to reach out to one another, offer support, and seek professional help when needed. Mental health is just as important as physical health, and no one should ever feel alone in their struggles.”

He further reaffirmed IFUDSA’s commitment to prioritising student welfare and mental health advocacy, with the aim of preventing similar tragedies in the future.

“We also reaffirm our commitment to advocating for improved student welfare and mental health support within the association, so that such tragedies can be prevented in the future,” the statement concluded.
