Mayegun of Ife, High Chief K.K. Ogundele, Dies at 96

The ancient city of Ile-Ife has been thrown into mourning following the passing of the Mayegun of Ife, High Chief K.K. Ogundele, who died on Friday evening at his residence in Moore, Ile-Ife, at the age of 96.

The respected traditional chief was said to have passed on peacefully after a long and fulfilled life dedicated to service to the throne, the people of Ile-Ife, and the preservation of Yoruba cultural heritage. Until his death, he remained widely regarded as one of the most influential and respected custodians of tradition in the historic kingdom.

In a statement issued by the Senior Media Officer of the Ooni’s Palace, Sodiq Lawal confirmed the passing of the revered chief, describing his transition as a great loss to the palace, the people of Ile-Ife, and the Yoruba traditional institution.

High Chief Ogundele held the prestigious title of Mayegun of Ife under the revered institution of the Ooni’s Palace, serving faithfully within the traditional council that supports the sacred throne of the Ooni of Ife, the spiritual head of the Yoruba people in Ile-Ife. Throughout his lifetime, he was known for his wisdom, deep cultural knowledge, and unwavering loyalty to the institution and the community he served.

His contributions to community development and cultural preservation earned him enduring respect across Ifeland and beyond. His passing marks the end of an era, as he remained one of the oldest and most distinguished traditional title holders in recent history.

He is survived by children, grandchildren, and several relatives.
