Ooni Urges Yoruba Lawyers to Champion Unity, Rule of Law at Egbe Amofin National Conference in Ile-Ife

The Ooni of Ife, Arole Oduduwa, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, Ojaja II, has called on legal practitioners of Yoruba extraction to remain united, uphold peace, and strengthen professional collaboration as the 2026 National Conference of Egbe Amofin O’odua commenced in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

The conference, which brought together distinguished jurists, Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs), legal scholars, members of the Bench and Bar, policymakers, academics, and other stakeholders within the justice sector, is being held from June 17 to June 19, 2026, at the Ojaja Royal Banquet Hall in the ancient city of Ile-Ife.

According to a statement issued by the Director of Media and Public Affairs at the Ooni’s Palace, Otunba Moses Olafare, the conference is themed “Advancing Constitutional Democracy: Accountability and Responsible Governance: The Rule of Law.”

Activities commenced on Wednesday evening with a grand reception and dinner hosted by the Ooni at the Ile-Oodua Palace, where delegates were treated to a warm welcome that reflected the rich cultural heritage and hospitality for which Ile-Ife is renowned.

Speaking during the event, the Chairman of Egbe Amofin O’odua, Aare Isiaka Olagunju (SAN), expressed profound gratitude to the Ooni for his exceptional support and generosity towards the association.

He noted that the 2026 conference represents the fourth national gathering of the body and described the reception accorded to members by the Ooni as unprecedented in the history of the association.

“This is our fourth national conference, and Kabiyesi is the first monarch to receive us in such a remarkable and generous manner. We are grateful for your unwavering support, your commitment to the legal profession, and your passion for the progress of Yorubaland,” Olagunju stated.

He further described the Ooni as a respected symbol of unity whose leadership continues to foster peace, development, cultural pride, and cohesion across Yorubaland and beyond.

Addressing the gathering, the Ooni expressed appreciation to the association for selecting Ile-Ife, widely regarded as the cradle of the Yoruba race, as the host city for the prestigious conference.

The monarch, who also serves as Co-Chairman of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN), said he was delighted when informed that the conference would be hosted in Ile-Ife, citing his longstanding relationship with members of the association and his deep respect for the legal profession.

“Lawyers have been in existence for a very long time, and I thank God for the important role they continue to play in society. When I was informed that I would be hosting this conference, I was genuinely happy. I welcome you all to Ile-Ife,” the Ooni said.

The revered monarch urged legal practitioners to continue promoting justice, fairness, accountability, and ethical conduct while strengthening bonds of friendship and cooperation within the profession.

“Let us continue to do good. I implore all of you to remain united because unity is very important. I have been with this association for a long time and have always attended your programmes.

“Do not allow grudges, divisions, or enmity to exist among you. Instead, spread peace, unity, love, and understanding among yourselves. As custodians of justice and defenders of the rule of law, you must also be ambassadors of peace and harmony in society,” he added.

The Ooni further stressed that constitutional democracy can only flourish where the rule of law is respected, governance remains accountable, and institutions are strengthened through collective commitment to national development.

He encouraged members of the legal profession to continue playing active roles in deepening democratic governance, promoting transparency, defending justice, and advancing social stability across Nigeria.

The opening ceremony and dinner attracted prominent legal luminaries, traditional rulers, government officials, and notable personalities from different parts of the country, laying the foundation for robust engagements on contemporary constitutional, governance, and justice-related issues.

The Ooni was accompanied by Her Royal Majesty, Olori Aderonke Ogunwusi, and Her Majesty, Olori Ashley Afolasade Ogunwusi, who joined him in receiving the distinguished guests.

The conference is expected to feature keynote presentations, panel discussions, technical sessions, and policy dialogues focused on strengthening democratic institutions, enhancing accountability mechanisms, and reinforcing the rule of law as essential pillars of national development.
