The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife has issued a query to the Owner of BVER hostel where a student reportedly died on Wednesday after falling inside a septic tank.

The Public Relations Officer of the institution, Abiodun Olanrewaju disclosed this in a statement on Friday, noting that the response of the hostel owner is being awaited.

The University's spokesman, in the statement also noted that the Criminal Investigation Department of the Nigerian Police Force has taken over the case to unravel the circumstances leading to the death of the 200-Level student of the Department of Linguistics and African Languages, identified as Ajibola Heritage Ayomikun.

Describing the incident as disturbing and unfortunate, Abiodun however noted that the the Hostel and several others in the 'Students Village' are privately owned as the University only has oversight functions over them.

“The owner of the private hostel, BVER, where the incidence occurred has been issued a query by the University Management and his response is being awaited.

“It must be noted that all the hostels in the student’s village are privately owned and they are not under the control of the University.

“The University Management presently has only oversight functions on these private hostels.”, Abiodun noted.

IFECITYBLOG had reported that a student of the institution died on Wednesday after falling inside a soakaway in one of the private hostels around the University campus.

It was also reported that students had blamed the unfortunate incident on the hostel management as they alleged poor state of facilities.
