The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of Professor Olanipekun Famakinwa, a prominent scholar in the Department of Philosophy, who passed away while attending an official meeting on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.
Famakinwa was said to have developed complications during the departmental meeting when colleagues observed he was breathing abnormally. He was immediately rushed to the university’s Health and Medical Centre for urgent medical attention but was later referred to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), where he was confirmed Brought In Dead (B.I.D).
In a statement issued by the university's Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, the management described the professor's sudden passing as a colossal loss to the university community, noting that his dedication to scholarship and service remained exemplary until his last moments.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simeon Bamire, alongside other principal officers of the institution, paid a condolence visit to the family of the deceased, where he expressed deep shock at the unfortunate incident. He described Famakinwa as a brilliant academic whose contributions to knowledge and humanity would be sorely missed.
“We are deeply saddened by the sudden departure of Professor Famakinwa, who died in active service to this great institution. His legacy of academic excellence and mentorship will continue to inspire generations,” the statement partly read.
The remains of the late professor have been deposited at the university's Department of Anatomy, while burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the family.
Until his death, Professor Famakinwa was a respected voice in African philosophy, ethics, and metaphysics, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of intellectual contributions and mentorship in the academic community.
