The National Sports Commission (NSC) has formally declared Ogun State ready to host the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival, following a thorough inspection of key competition venues, logistical frameworks, and athletes' accommodations throughout the state.
During a recent facility tour, the NSC delegation, led by its Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, assessed critical infrastructure including the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Alake Sports Centre, Remo Stars Sports Complex, and Babcock University, which is set to serve as the athletes' village for the event.
The Gateway Games 2024, slated to take place from May 16 to 30, will feature over 32 sporting disciplines, drawing thousands of athletes, coaches, and officials from across the country.
This edition is poised to be one of the most expansive and inclusive in the Festival’s history, reflecting Nigeria’s growing commitment to sports development and youth engagement.
Speaking after the inspection tour, NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko commended Ogun State’s preparedness and expressed high optimism for a successful event. “What I have seen here in Ogun goes beyond physical infrastructure.
It reflects a deep sense of readiness, ambition, and dedication. This is shaping up to be one of the most remarkable National Sports Festivals in our country’s history. Ogun is ready to set a new benchmark for future games.”
Governor Dapo Abiodun, while reaffirming the state’s readiness, assured both the Commission and the Nigerian populace of Ogun's commitment to delivering a memorable and impactful Festival.
“Hosting this Festival is both an honour and a duty. Every facility, every logistical component, and every detail has been meticulously prepared to reflect the excellence of Ogun State and the promise of Nigeria.
The Gateway Games will not only celebrate our sporting talent but also demonstrate what’s achievable through strong federal-state collaboration,” he said.
As the principal body overseeing sports development in Nigeria, the National Sports Commission continues to play a pivotal role in unifying national efforts in the sports sector, enforcing standards, and fostering collaboration across all levels of government.
The success of the Gateway Games 2024 is expected to serve as a model for future initiatives under the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration.
Preparations remain in top gear as Ogun State gears up to welcome the nation’s best sporting talents in what promises to be a Festival for the ages.
