Adeleke Warns Radio Stations Against Broadcast Code Violations, Cautions Politicians Over Incitement to Violence

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has issued a stern warning to broadcast media outlets operating within the state, urging them to adhere strictly to the Nigerian Broadcasting Code and refrain from promoting content capable of inciting violence or disrupting public peace.

In a statement signed by the Governor’s spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke expressed deep concern over what he described as the growing trend of irresponsible broadcasting, particularly the failure of some radio stations to uphold professional standards during public discourse on sensitive matters.

The Governor condemned the practice of allowing guests on air to make libelous or seditious remarks against public officials without being challenged or counterbalanced by the right of fair hearing for affected parties.

He emphasized that the actions of some stations have contributed to public misinformation and could incite unrest if not addressed.

As part of immediate measures to curb the trend, Governor Adeleke has directed the Commissioner for Information to summon the General Managers of all implicated stations for a formal briefing and review session.

He warned that sanctions would be applied to any station that continues to violate established broadcast regulations.

"While this administration remains committed to the principles of press freedom, such freedom must be exercised with responsibility and in line with the national broadcasting guidelines. Any media platform that continues to defy these standards will be held accountable," the Governor stated.

In the same vein, Governor Adeleke called on opposition political figures to desist from making inflammatory statements, especially in response to the recent Court of Appeal judgment concerning local government administration in the state.

He described as unacceptable the conduct of certain politicians who, during recent media engagements, encouraged supporters to resist the court ruling through unlawful means.

“This administration is fully committed to the rule of law. The judiciary remains the appropriate avenue for resolving political disagreements.

"Anyone attempting to undermine this process through incitement or threats of violence is an enemy of the people and will face the full wrath of the law,” Governor Adeleke said.

He urged residents of Osun State to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and vigilant against any attempts to destabilize the state through reckless political rhetoric.

“The issue of local government leadership is being addressed through constitutional means. There is no need for any form of unrest or bloodshed. Those who attempt to instigate violence will be dealt with accordingly,” the Governor emphasized.
