“We Are One Big Family” — Ooni of Ife Declares as Ghana’s President Mahama Is Installed Aare Atayeto Oodua

In a historic reaffirmation of Africa’s shared ancestry, unity and cultural continuity, the Ooni of Ife and Permanent Chairman of the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council (SNTRC), His Imperial Majesty, Arole Oduduwa Olofin Adimula, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, Ojaja II, has formally installed the President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, as the Aare Atayeto Oodua of the Source.

President Mahama arrived at the Ooni’s Palace in Ile-Ife on Monday amid royal splendour, cultural pageantry and heightened security. He was warmly received by the Ooni of Ife, who is also the Co-Chairman of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria.

The historic installation ceremony took place at Afewonro Park, Enuwa Square, within the Ooni’s Palace, and attracted an impressive assembly of traditional rulers, eminent personalities, cultural leaders and dignitaries from across Yorubaland, Ghana and other parts of Africa.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Ooni of Ife described President Mahama as a symbol of African unity, cultural continuity and visionary leadership, stressing that Africans share common roots that transcend modern political borders.

According to the monarch, President Mahama’s relationship with Ile-Ife and the Ooni’s Palace predates his current recognition, recalling that the Ghanaian leader had maintained a long-standing bond with the palace over the years.

“This palace is not new to you. You have been here before, and throughout my journey to becoming the Ooni of Ife, you have been part of that journey. You have grown with us in our midst,” the Ooni said.

The Ooni further emphasised that there are no real boundaries between Nigeria and Ghana—and indeed across Africa—highlighting the deep cultural, linguistic and historical connections that bind African peoples together. He cited the striking similarities between Yoruba and Ga languages as clear evidence of shared ancestry.

“In Ghana you say Akwaabo, here we say Ekaabo. Are they not the same? We are one people and one big family,” the monarch declared.

Describing Ile-Ife as President Mahama’s ancestral home, the Ooni recalled how the Ghanaian leader has consistently identified with the city, often expressing deep interest in the history, spirituality and heritage of the Source.

The monarch also disclosed that during one of President Mahama’s visits to Ile-Ife after leaving office some years ago, prayers were offered to the ancestors with a prophetic declaration that he would return to leadership as President of Ghana—a declaration which, according to the Ooni, has now been fulfilled.

“To the glory of God, today you are truly a reformer. You achieved what many thought was impossible. Immediately you assumed office for a second term, the economy of Ghana experienced a remarkable turnaround. We are very proud of you,” the Ooni said.

Commending Mahama’s leadership credentials, the Ooni described him as a leader with a rare ‘economic touch’, noting that the positive impact of his governance in Ghana is already resonating across Africa and the global Black community. He expressed strong confidence that President Mahama’s influence would extend even further on the continental stage.

“You are a leader of great refinement, vision and purpose. I am deeply grateful and proud of you,” the Ooni concluded, while projecting that Mahama would one day serve as President and Chairman of the African Union.

Also speaking at the ceremony, the Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, represented by his Deputy, Prince Kola Adewusi, praised President Mahama for his outstanding contributions to peace, unity and regional stability across Africa.

Governor Adeleke particularly commended Mahama’s intervention in mediating between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and countries in the Sahel region at a critical period of rising tensions.

According to the governor, while many voices were “beating the drums of war,” Mahama chose the path of dialogue and engagement, fostering reconciliation, understanding and regional cooperation.

He further noted that President Mahama has remained a respected voice on the global stage, consistently advocating for peace, unity and a more just world order.

“President Mahama is a strong advocate of peace and unity, not only within West Africa but across the world. His commitment to diplomacy, dialogue and coexistence has earned him respect beyond national and continental boundaries,” Adeleke said.

Describing the chieftaincy title as well deserved, the Osun governor stated that Mahama’s installation as Aare Atayeto Oodua of the Source reflects his lifelong dedication to peace-building and humanitarian ideals.

“Mahama is truly a global peace ambassador. I warmly congratulate you on this installation and recognition for your unwavering commitment to peace and unity,” he added.

In his response, President Mahama expressed profound gratitude to the Ooni of Ife for finding him worthy of the prestigious title. He also acknowledged the presence and goodwill of Governor Ademola Adeleke, business mogul Alhaji Aliko Dangote, and other distinguished guests at the ceremony.

President Mahama reaffirmed that the people of Ile-Ife and Ghana are one family, noting that the people of Accra trace their ancestral origins to Ile-Ife. He described the installation as divinely ordained and dedicated the honour to the people of Ghana.

The newly installed Aare Atayeto Oodua of the Source pledged to continue strengthening unity, harmony and cooperation between Ghana and Nigeria, as well as across the West African sub-region.

“As long as I remain President of Ghana, I will ensure that I bring the two countries together and help bridge the gap between ECOWAS and our brothers who have departed from the community,” he assured.
