In a vibrant display of faith, culture, and unity, the Ooni of Ife, Arole Oduduwa, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi on Tuesday hosted the 2026 edition of the annual Church Choir Competition as part of Easter celebrations, rewarding outstanding choirs with cash prizes and food items.
The monarch, who also serves as the Permanent Chairman of the Southern Nigerian Traditional Rulers Council (SNTRC), convened the spiritually uplifting event at the prestigious Ife Grand Resort, drawing participation from leading church choirs across Ondo State and beyond.
Now in its fourth edition, the competition continues to grow as a unifying platform aimed at promoting religious harmony, youth engagement, and the celebration of Easter through music. Participating choirs included The Central Choir of the Catholic Diocese of Ondo State, the Redeemed Christian Church of God (Region 22), St. David’s Anglican Cathedral, Akure, the Celestial Church of Christ Cathedral, and St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Igbara-Oke, among others.
Each choir delivered soul-stirring renditions marked by vocal excellence, coordination, and stage presence, thrilling guests and dignitaries in attendance. A panel of seasoned judges comprising music experts and clergy members assessed performances based on vocal quality, harmony, originality, and overall presentation.
Speaking at the event, the Convener, Fadekemi Ogunwusi, expressed deep appreciation to the Ooni for his consistent commitment to fostering interfaith unity and empowering young talents through creative initiatives.
She noted that the competition has become a vital bridge for strengthening relationships within Christian communities while promoting shared moral and spiritual values.
At the climax of the event, the Redeemed Christian Church of God (Region 22), Ondo State, emerged as the overall winner, clinching the top prize. The Central Choir of the Catholic Diocese of Ondo State secured second place, while St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Igbara-Oke, finished third. The Celestial Church of Christ Cathedral, Ondo State, came fourth.
In his characteristic generosity, the Ooni rewarded the winners handsomely. The first-place choir received ₦2 million alongside food items; the second-place winner was awarded ₦1.5 million and food items; the third-place choir received ₦1 million with food items; while the fourth-place winner went home with ₦500,000 and food items.
Addressing participants and guests, Ooni Ogunwusi emphasized the significance of Easter as a symbol of sacrifice, hope, and renewal. He urged Nigerians to embrace love, peace, and unity, calling on religious institutions to continue playing a central role in fostering harmony and national development.
The monarch further reiterated his unwavering commitment to supporting initiatives that promote peaceful coexistence among diverse religious groups, reinforcing his broader vision of unity across communities.
